Always Includes Before
The year was 1956. I was about nine years old, home from school with a serious case of Asian flu. My feet and head felt as if they were on fire, my body as if it were in scalding water.
My temperature rose to over 105 degrees and stayed there. I was delirious, crying out in pain. My family feared for my life.
While I was ill, I remember a skinny guy with black-rimmed glasses, wearing a white short-sleeved shirt, standing at the foot of my bed. Until about 1983 I assumed he was my second cousin. He was the only person I knew that wore black-rimmed glasses!
I remember that after this visit from my "cousin," my fever broke. The fire in my body left, along with my "cousin," leaving serenity and peace in their wake.
Each time I look at an old photograph of the spiritual leader of Eckankar, Sri Harold Klemp, when he wore black-rimmed glasses, I think of this incident. It recalls a feeling of relief, serenity, and gratitude for being alive. I think of the words of the Mahanta: "I am always with you." I know this encompasses all time. For I've now recognized that the "cousin" who visited me in 1956 when I was so ill was really Harold Klemp, even before he became the Mahanta in 1981!
