The Woman Who Never Dreams
Dream Visits Reassure a Grieving Widow
By NK
"I never dream," my mother always said.
Never, that is, until my father became very sick and slipped into a coma. Tests showed there was permanent brain damage, and the doctors told us he would not survive.
It was decided that it was best to remove him from life support.
The night before the life-support system was to be disconnected, it was difficult for my mother to get to sleep. But as soon as she did, my father came to her in a dream.
My mother was surprised when he announced, "I'm packing my belongings and moving to another house!"
On the way to the hospital the next morning, Mother told the dream to my husband, wondering what it meant. Gently, he reassured her.
"Dad came to you in the dream to comfort you. He wanted to let you know he's fine, but that he's moving out of his physical body."
Two days later, my father died, and over the months that followed, Mother had a series of dreams.
In one of them, she and my father were young again. He held her close, and she said she could actually feel his heartbeat. The dream brought her some comfort and peace.
Another time, she was taking a nap on the sofa. As she started to awaken, she opened her eyes to find my father standing over her, watching her as she slept. She quickly blinked her eyes twice and opened them again. But he was still there.
The third time she blinked, he was gone.
When she told me this experience she said, "Nora, I know he was really there. The colors were so vibrant. He was wearing his red-and-black plaid shirt and jeans. He was so young and handsome!"
"Well, you know, Mom," I said, "It could be that if you were to see him walking down the hallway when you were wide awake, you might be afraid. But when you're sleeping, you're able to move more easily into a higher state of consciousness. Then he can come to you without frightening you. He wants you to know that he is alive as Soul, and that his love is always with you."
I am so grateful that I could share with my mother the understanding I've gained through the teachings of Eckankar. These dream reunions with my father greatly eased her grief and brought her peace.
The woman who never dreams learned that there is so much more to life than she once believed. She learned that Soul is eternal and that the love of her life is with her still.
