A Meeting in Las Vegas
A Teenager Receives a Life-long Gift of Love
I grew up in a family where my parents were in constant conflict with each other. I knew they loved my sister and me, but I often took refuge in my room to get away from the fighting.
When I would lie down on the bed and close my eyes, soon there would be a beautiful blue light accompanied by a soft, humming sound. I always welcomed this experience because it was so calming. It brought me so much joy and peace.
The summer I was sixteen, our family went on a vacation to California. Our time together in the car was tense, as my parents continued to argue with each other. I was relieved when we finally stopped for the evening at a motel near the Las Vegas Strip.
No one was interested in gambling, but the neon lights were so pretty. My sister and I talked our parents into taking a short walk along the Strip.
After we had walked several blocks, I turned to look at a man who was passing by. He was a short, tanned gentleman with laugh lines on his face. His bright blue eyes seemed to look straight into my heart.
He didn't say a word. He just smiled at me with a look of such great love that it surprised me. The moment seemed endless as I smiled back. I felt a lightness and happiness begin to flow through me. I couldn't contain my joy.
"That man smiled at me!" I said to my parents.
They were not happy at all. Worried that an unknown man had smiled at their teenage daughter in a strange city, they hurried us back to the motel.
As we left Las Vegas early the next morning, I felt a joy that I couldn't explain. The sun rising over the desert was incredibly beautiful. It felt like the sun was also rising in my heart, and I was filled with a wonderful, pure love. Something had changed inside me.
I carried the memory of the man with the sparkling blue eyes with me for many years. The love I felt in that moment helped me get through some challenging times later on.
Years later, I found the teachings of Eckankar and saw a picture of Paul Twitchell, the modern-day founder, for the first time. I recognized him instantly.
Paul Twitchell was the man with the beautiful, sparkling eyes!
At the time of my Las Vegas trip, he was the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master. When he passed me on the street that night, he gave me a gift of love that helped guide me through the hard times of my teenage years.
What a wonderful realization that I had been protected and cared for all along! That meeting with Paul is an experience I will always treasure.
