Reincarnation and Past Lives

One child was six, and the other three. It was a preholiday gathering of family, and someone popped the question:

"What do you want for Christmas?"

"Checkers," replied the six-year-old girl. "I want checkers for Christmas."

"Checkers! Why you don't even know how to play the game."

"Yes, I do!" the little girl said.

"Who taught you how to play checkers? Did you learn in school? Did your parents teach you?"

"Nobody did. We always used to play checkers." The girl's eyes were mirrors of truth.

"You and who else?" someone asked.

"My brother and I." The three-year-old brother looked up and nodded agreement to the questioning adults. "We used to play before, when we were big."

"Before? When was that?"

"When we were big before. Before we came to live here. We were old, older than you."

One adult consulted another. Minutes later, someone found an old, dusty box of checkers and set them up in front of the two children. Sure enough, the moves were familiar to them. They played like old hands. The adults looked on in bewilderment as the boy and girl nimbly moved the pieces around the board.

"Did you live together before?" someone asked.

The little boy kept on playing, letting his older sister do the talking. "My brother and I lived in the same house then. We were married."

Someone mentioned a deceased uncle.

The little girl piped up, "I knew him too! I met him before I came to live with you!"

This uncle had died before the six-year-old was born, and the doubting adults shook their heads at her fantasy. But she went on to describe him in perfect detail.

Now comes a curious thing. This family held to a particular religion that didn't acknowledge reincarnation. But over the years they had had many mysterious encounters with deceased relatives until, bit by bit, the family crossed the fine line between religious doctrine and actual spiritual experience. They began to acknowledge through the certainty of these experiences that reincarnation was not only possible, but probable.

And so they moved one step further from their limitations and a step closer to spiritual freedom.
