Why a Spiritual Practice Matters

For many spiritual seekers, it’s tempting to believe that the search for growth is a quest for something out there—a special teacher, a faraway place, or even the latest app.

Sri Doug Kunin, the Mᴀʜᴀɴᴛᴀ, the Living ECK Master and spiritual leader of Eᴄᴋᴀɴᴋᴀʀ, believes the real search isn’t “out there” but “in here.” As Soul, a divine spark of God, the answers already exist within each of us. “What we need is a daily spiritual practice that unlocks it,” he says.

To hear a take on this subject given by Sri Doug before becoming the spiritual leader of Eᴄᴋᴀɴᴋᴀʀ, check out this episode of the Eᴄᴋᴀɴᴋᴀʀ Soul Adventure Podcast.

Prayer. Meditation. Contemplation.

Each one is a doorway to the same sacred goal, a response to the call of Soul. Yet every door requires a key.

For millions of seekers across time, the sacred sound of HU is the key that can turn these practices into something truly powerful. Whether you add it to a current meditation or mindfulness routine or sing it on its own, HU can and will awaken the divine love and guidance already within you.

A Spiritual Practice That Works

Doug describes HU as a universal spiritual vitamin—simple to use, nourishing to the Soul, and adaptable to life’s challenges. It calms grief, eases sadness and stress, and brings about a gentle yet transformative shift over time.

“Consistent daily practice, even just a little each day, creates a vibratory current in our own being,” he said, “and that current extends far beyond the individual. It touches other people. It touches all life.”

Doug illustrated the point with a story about a friend who encountered an excitable dog named “Tough Enough” while walking through Grand Marais, Minnesota. The dog was a whirlwind of frenetic energy—until Doug’s friend softly sang HU. The dog calmed down instantly, gazing into her eyes with quiet connection.

“That’s the power of HU,” Doug said. “It makes you a magnet of divine love.”

What is HU?

HU (pronounced like hue) is known as the sound behind all sounds—a carrier of divine love between the Creator and you. It’s not limited to any religion or belief system and can enhance any path you’re already on.

When you sing or chant HU, you’re contacting a living center of spiritual vibration vastly more powerful than the human consciousness. Your very atoms become energized and enlivened with this spiritual current from the source.”

Eᴄᴋᴀɴᴋᴀʀ teaches HU as one of many spiritual meditation techniques designed to put you in direct contact with the life-giving forces within. These creative practices are simple, natural, and free of the strenuous effort often associated with silencing the mind.

Love and Gratitude Transform Any Spiritual Practice

There’s one more essential ingredient that makes a spiritual practice truly powerful: gratitude.

Doug explained, “The active element of contemplation or a spiritual exercise is coming at it from a state of love and gratitude, and that’s only something we can do.”

This choice to approach a practice with love and gratitude is what he called “the creative element . . . that opens the doorway to higher awareness.”

That’s when the magic happens. As Doug put it, “. . . it opens the doorway so Divine Spirit can start to co-work with us in unexpected ways. It’ll meet you halfway, and the possibilities are infinite.”

The Many Benefits of Singing HU

Here are a few of the benefits of adding HU to your prayer, contemplation, or meditation practice:

Releases stress and worry — Like a tree dropping its leaves in autumn, HU helps you let go of what no longer serves you.
Awakens your heart — Singing HU fills you with love and gratitude, opening the door to higher awareness and miracles in your life.
Enhances your path — Whatever your beliefs, HU strengthens and deepens your connection to the divine.
Serves all life — The ripples of your love touch others in ways you may never know, simply by singing HU.

It can work for anyone, regardless of your beliefs or background. “But the main benefit,” Doug notes, “is to fill the seeker’s heart with divine love.”

How to Practice HU

HU is a spiritual meditation mantra you can sing anytime, anywhere. Some choose to sing for 15 minutes a day; others use it whenever they need a moment of calm or clarity.

Here’s how to try it for yourself:

💎 Find a quiet spot.
💎 Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and relax.

How the Fifteen Times Exercise Deepens Meditation

15x Exercise

Spiritual exercises offer more than just peace of mind—they help awaken Soul to its divine nature. Much like meditation, spiritual exercises help us access parts of ourselves we didn’t know existed.

What Is the Fifteen Times Exercise?

The Fifteen Times Exercise is a transformational spiritual technique as straightforward as its name.  Write a positive, present-tense statement of how or what you wish to be fifteen times on a piece of paper. For example:   I am happy, healthy, wise and free. (Repeat.)

The Power of “I Am” in Spiritual Meditation and Spiritual Exercises

There is a difference between the Fifteen Times Exercise and more passive affirmations. The statement “I am” puts one firmly in the present moment, rather than stating “I want to be,” or “Someday I will…”

This shift in language taps into the powerful “as if” principle. This is the technique of imagining that you already are or have that which you desire, and then living from the state of the wish fulfilled. In doing so, you step into that reality you want by thinking “from the end.” You are using the creative power of Soul.

Spiritual Exercise for the Soul

Spiritual meditation can be viewed as exercise, because it’s a “workout” for the most sacred part of yourself. You exercise your body and mind. Why not exercise yourself as a spiritual being?

Just as physical strength builds over time, so does spiritual strength and, in turn, awareness. By regularly doing spiritual meditation exercises, you gradually become more in tune with your Higher Self—more creative, more loving, and more aligned with your divine purpose.

An Active Form of Meditation

While many think of meditation as sitting in silence or focusing on the breath, Eᴄᴋᴀɴᴋᴀʀ emphasizes using the creative imagination, a divine gift. The Fifteen Times Exercise can be a form of active meditation—creating a bridge between intention and actual experience.

Much like chanting HU—another core practice in Eᴄᴋᴀɴᴋᴀʀ—the Fifteen Times Exercise helps align the practitioner with the divine cause in one’s life.

Try the Fifteen Times Exercise

You can try it now. Begin by crafting a present-tense statement that reflects your highest spiritual aspiration. Write your declaration 15 times. Hear the words as you write. Let the vibration of the words settle into your heart.

You may find the phrasing shifts a bit as you write. This is natural and is evidence of you coming into a higher agreement with your goal.

The Fifteen Times Exercise is a powerful doorway. It allows you to shape your inner reality and to approach life with more clarity, strength, and confidence.  Spiritual effort doesn’t have to be complicated—it just has to be consistent. And it can start with a simple step: “I am…”

You can hear an example of how the Fifteen Times Exercise works for a long-time student of Eᴄᴋᴀɴᴋᴀʀ, Heather Davari, interviewed by Doug Kunin, vice president of Eᴄᴋᴀɴᴋᴀʀ, on the Eᴄᴋᴀɴᴋᴀʀ Soul Adventure PodcastCheck out this chapter of “Encounters with Inner Spiritual Guides” on the YouTube version of the podcast.

BONUS TIP:   Be alert to changes. “As time goes on, watch how the Holy Spirit begins to make changes in your life. Little things will happen. For instance, if you’re looking for happiness, events will start to shape themselves where you have new choices. It’s up to you to make the right choice, but doors will begin to open for you.”  —ECK Master Harold Klemp

BONUS TIP:  You might follow the Fifteen Times exercise with a few minutes of chanting HU as a way to deepen the connection and invite divine insight.  “Singing HU each day can lead to a deeper understanding of yourself and why things happen the way they do in your life. It carefully opens your awareness to new viewpoints and attitudes.”  —ECK Master Harold Klemp

HU, An Ancient Spiritual Mantra

The God Sound: A Spiritual Exercise

HERE’S A SPIRITUAL EXERCISE TO TRY IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE JOY AND WONDER:

Shut your eyes and look into the Spiritual Eye. (It’s between your eyebrows, in the center of your forehead.) Sing HU, an ancient name for God, one of the most powerful words for spiritual upliftment.

As you sing HU, listen for a holy Sound. It may come in any number of ways: like the sound of a rumbling train, a singing bird, buzzing bees, a mellow flute, or even soothing guitars.

It brings joy and wonder.

The holy sounds are the creative action of the Life Force, the ECK, as It moves atoms in the invisible worlds. The Sound to reach your ears resonates with your state of consciousness.

While singing HU, imagine the holy Sound of God cascading over you, like a waterfall of sparkling pure waters. It is cleansing the blemishes of spirit.

The Sound opens a secret path to the joys of love and grace. You find peace, joy, and spiritual freedom.

The Sound of Soul

To Enjoy the Sound Current

The Word, the Voice of the Sᴜɢᴍᴀᴅ [God], goes forth like a wave from the center of a pond and sings Its way through all the planes in many different songs and melodies. Each is the living Word, creating and giving life to everything in each world. By its very life—this ECK, the essence of the Sᴜɢᴍᴀᴅ, the Spirit of all things—life exists.

When It reaches the end of the worlds It returns like the wave, gathering up all Souls that are ready to do God’s work. They are returned to the true home and become Coworkers with God, having completed their mission in life.

Read the above passage aloud to yourself.  Then think for a moment—what is your favorite musical instrument, sound, or melody?  Close your eyes, and imagine that you can hear it.  Let it fill you with love.  The Mᴀʜᴀɴᴛᴀ can show you where that Sound originates in the higher worlds.  Stay with this contemplation for twenty minutes or more.

During your day, take special notice of the harmony of life around you. There will be something that speaks to your mission in this life.

To Give and Receive Divine Love

By Harold Klemp

Soul moves through the evolutionary process in a number of different forms, including those of animals and birds. These are some of the many different ways in which Soul gains experience, thereby gaining expression of Its divine self.

In the process, Soul must learn to receive love and to give love.

One of the best ways to learn how to give and receive divine love is to chant HU as a daily spiritual exercise. Simply sit comfortably where no one will disturb you, close your eyes, and gaze gently into your Spiritual Eye. This is the point between your eyebrows, at the center of your forehead. Then sing HU softly on your outgoing breath.

As you do this, feel within the love that God has for you and the love that you have for God. This is why HU is sometimes called a love song to God.

Few people take the time to simply sit still and contemplate for twenty minutes to a half hour each day. Yet when you do this, you open your inner senses to the Light and Sound of God—to the pure love of God.

And as you do the spiritual exercises and get more of the Sound and Light of Divine Spirit flowing into you, what are you going to do with it?

You can’t spend your life in contemplation of the higher truths without doing anything to bring a little light to your fellow man. One way to start is this: Simply give back some service of love to the world, your friend, your neighbor; and it may be simply by doing a good deed every day that no one ever knows about.

On the Mountain of God

By Harold Klemp

This is a technique of the imagination.

Find a quiet place for this spiritual exercise where no one will disturb you for ten or fifteen minutes. Then shut your eyes and look behind and between your eyebrows. That is the location of your Spiritual Eye.

Now imagine you are climbing to the top of a broad green mountain. Follow the dirt path that leads to a meadow dressed in a carpet of bright, cheerful flowers. Powder-white clouds kiss the summit of the mountain and will instill in you a sense of great joy and wonder.

That is the Mountain of God.

When you reach the top, lie upon the thick, soft carpet of luxurious grass. Feel the sunshine play on your face, arms, and body. Now shut your eyes there on the mountain, too, as you did at the beginning of this spiritual exercise.

Then look gently but steadily into your Spiritual Eye for the Light of God. While waiting for It to appear, sing HU slowly, again and again.

The Light may appear as a soft field of light, similar to the soft white clouds above the mountain. Or it may be a pinpoint of light—blue, white, yellow, purple, or even green or pink.

Continue to watch for the Light within your Spiritual Eye. Now also start listening for the Sound of God—the vibration of the Holy Spirit moving the atoms of life. You may hear It as the sound of a flute, a rushing wind, the chirping of birds, a crashing waterfall, ringing bells, or the buzzing of bees. These are actual, not imaginary, sounds.

This dual manifestation of the Voice of God can bring you more love, wisdom, and understanding.

Let the experience be all you can imagine it to be—and maybe even more.
