Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?

That question feels especially urgent today—in the wake of heartbreaking events in our schools and public places, and with conflicts unfolding around the world. These tragedies raise questions people have asked for all time:

If there is a just and loving God, why do these things happen? Why do bad things happen to good people?

Will Harman, a long-time student of Eᴄᴋᴀɴᴋᴀʀ and guest on the Eᴄᴋᴀɴᴋᴀʀ Soul Adventure Podcast, has had to face that question not just for himself, but as a father.

A Spiritual Approach for Helping Children Cope with Tragedy

Years ago, after the Newtown school tragedy, my daughter came to me afraid.

She was in middle school then, and the events left her shaken—asking things like, Do I need to hide under my desk? What do we need to do when we go to school?

As a parent, you feel that deeply. You’re processing your own emotions while trying to help your child make sense of something that feels impossible to understand.

The perspective and tools I’ve gained through my study of Eᴄᴋᴀɴᴋᴀʀ have helped me immeasurably, and I believe they can help others, too.

So I did what felt right in that moment—I sat down and wrote a letter to both my daughters.

The Foundation of Everything—You Are Soul

I started by acknowledging the tragedy and that it was weighing on my mind and heart, as well. Then I shared with my daughters the foundation of everything I understand:

You are Soul. You are a spark of God. You cannot die.

This understanding came to me very clearly when I was younger. I remember hearing the words You are Soul and just knowing they were true. It spoke directly to me—not to my mind, but to something deeper.

It helped me realize I am not just this body. I am not just my thoughts or emotions. Those are like garments I wear. The real self—the engine behind it all—is Soul, this eternal, unique divine spark of God.

And it’s not just humans. All life, animals, insects, every living creature—is Soul.

Perspective in Times of Crisis

Furthermore, each Soul is part of something much larger—a quest to learn how to love unconditionally. Earth serves as a schoolhouse for this spiritual growth.

So, I asked my daughters to imagine something: See the entire planet at once—every person, every animal, every living being—all moving through life in this moment.

And from that viewpoint, recognize that every second Souls are coming into these bodies—human or otherwise. Some of these entries are very peaceful, and some are difficult. We call that birth. The same is true of Soul leaving the body—we call this death.

For me, this perspective is key in times of crisis. Focusing on the bigger picture brings a shift in consciousness, reminding me that even a tragic event—while sad and difficult—is one moment in the flow of life on Soul’s infinite journey.

Why Does Life Have to Be So Hard?

This is a question my daughters have asked me directly. And I’m honest with them: I don’t know why a specific tragedy happens to a specific person. I don’t know their journey. I don’t know their relationship with the Divine.

I do know that these Souls have lived before and will continue living. Through reincarnation and free will, Soul gains lifetimes of experience, expanding our awareness and helping us grow into a greater expression of Divine Love.

A Simple Way to Bring Love into the World

After the Newtown tragedy, there was a suggestion in the media to do acts of kindness in honor of those who had died.

I encouraged my daughters to take that to heart: Do one kind thing each day for someone else, without any expectation of reward. It may sound simple, but it’s a powerful spiritual exercise that brings love and happiness in greater measure.

Experience Spiritual Truth for Yourself

I told my daughters that I could share what I’ve experienced and what I know to be true, but I couldn’t prove it to them—only they could prove it to themselves.

Here are some easy techniques that have worked for me and many others:

  • The easiest technique of all is to chant the sacred sound and ancient mantra HU. This word has the power to uplift you spiritually for inner peace, healing, and insight.
  • Keep a dream journal. Look for clues and guidance that can help you in your daily life.
  • Ask questions, then watch how the universe goes out of its way to answer!

Answers often show up in unexpected ways—images on a billboard, a license plate, or words from a stranger. You’ll begin to see that life is always communicating with you. And over time, as you become more aware of your spiritual nature, the line between life here and life beyond begins to blur.

Living Life as a Gift

I ended my letter to my daughters with something simple: Know that I love you. Remember life is a great adventure. Live it to its fullest. And remember who you are.

You are Soul.

Travel Triggers a Past Life Recall

It was the summer of 1990 and my girlfriend and I were river and trail guides. As summer wrapped up, we took a trip from Colorado to California. Then unusual experiences began!

Near Steamboat Springs, Colorado, another camper casually asked if we were on our honeymoon. We weren’t—but the question sparked something inside me. It felt like a “waking dream”—an experience that grabs your attention and hints at a deeper spiritual message. I didn’t understand it yet, but I knew to pay attention.

A Mystery Illness in the Mountains

A day later, while we were driving west near the base of the Wasatch Mountains, I was suddenly overcome by a mysterious illness. I became delirious and feverish, haunted by inner visions of a nightmarish, blinding light. I needed rest, so we found a place to camp, and I immediately fell asleep in the middle of the afternoon. That night, I woke up—the fever had broken, and I felt better.

At the time, I suspected it was some kind of cellular memory—a past-life echo bubbling up in my body. I filed the experience away.

A Past Life from Donner Pass?

A few days later, we found ourselves driving through the infamous Donner Pass. It was late, and the only option we had was to sleep in the car at a rest area. The next morning, we discovered we were near the very site of the historic Donner Party tragedy.

My girlfriend Suzie, a history major, filled me in on the harrowing journey of pioneers who faced starvation, brutal elements, and death in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I began to wonder: Could I have been one of them?

Discovering Jay Fosdick

Months later, I found a book listing the names of those in the Donner Party. One name stood out: Jay Fosdick. He joined up with the Donners later at the base of the Wasatch Mountains—interestingly, while also on his honeymoon with his wife, Sarah. Suddenly that question from the camper made sense— “Are you on your honeymoon?”

The mysterious illness I experienced near the Wasatch Mountains occurred at the very place where Jay, his wife, and the Donner Party first encountered serious trouble. Cutting a trail through the rugged terrain delayed them by a month. My blinding inner vision echoed reports of sun blindness during the harsh desert stretch of their journey, which also took longer than expected. The final blow came in the Sierra Nevada, where record-breaking early snow left them trapped. In a desperate bid for survival, Jay and some others set off in search of help. Only a handful survived, including Jay’s wife. Jay, however, died in the wilderness of starvation and exposure.

A bigger picture was coming into focus.

Other parallels emerged: Jay had a violin; I had played violin in a youth symphony. Jay had a gold pocket watch. When I was young, I had a similar treasured pocket watch—an odd choice for a kid! These weren’t just coincidences. I came to understand: I had been Jay Fosdick in that life.

I couldn’t help but wonder: “Why did I have that lifetime as Jay Fosdick who died an awful death, frozen and starved in the snow?”

I would soon find out.

“…karma isn’t punishment—it’s education for Soul…
A way to learn responsibility
and grow in divine love.”

Another Past Life—as an Aztec Priest

Later on, in the mid-1990s, I visited Teotihuacan near Mexico City. A local vendor there insisted I buy a beautifully decorated flute. I didn’t want it—but he wouldn’t take no for an answer. It had an obsidian blade on the end, like those used in ancient sacrifices. Eventually, I gave in and bought it.

Shortly after the purchase, I developed a splitting headache unlike anything I’d ever experienced. In quiet contemplation, I received a vision of a past life—as an Aztec priest. In that life, I had sacrificed people, even though I knew it was wrong. I had the opportunity to refuse—but I likely would have been sacrificed myself.

Going Even Deeper

How were these lives connected? And why had I become that priest in the first place? Again, I entered contemplation. In my inner vision, a scene unfolded from 14th century England. I was a religious hermit, deeply connected to Divine Spirit, hearing the inner Sound of God. However, I lacked humility and harshly judged others.

In that life, I had boasted, “I’d rather die the most awful death than offend God!” That bold claim set a karmic lesson into motion—my reincarnation as the Aztec priest was a test where I had to choose: sacrifice others or die an awful death myself. In turn, Jay Fosdick’s life was sacrificed, thus completing the karmic cycle.

The Gift of My Spiritual Guide

Throughout this journey, I was guided inwardly by the Mᴀʜᴀɴᴛᴀ—an inner spiritual teacher who offers personalized instruction through dreams, insights, subtle nudges, and more.

He didn’t walk the path for me, but he pointed the way. He helped me see that karma isn’t punishment—it’s education for Soul, the eternal and unique identity of every person. It is a way to learn responsibility and grow in divine love.

Going Beyond Karma

Some might say my stories are just coincidences. And I get it—this kind of experience is deeply personal. But for me, the connections are undeniable.

A simple yet powerful tool I used in my contemplations was singing HU—an ancient mantra and sacred sound. HU uplifts, purifies, and helps me stay receptive to divine guidance, which is always available. I sing it while driving, walking, or quietly to myself during a busy day. Through this simple practice, I came to understand my past-life experiences. Ultimately, I was able to work off the karma I had accumulated and step into greater freedom and love—reflected in my life today.

These are the gifts the HU, the Mᴀʜᴀɴᴛᴀ, and the ECK teachings offer to all who are sincere in their search for truth.

Dreams & Medieval Past Lives

Understanding and Interpreting Dreams

Have you had a dream about a certain period of history? Could this be a memory of a past life?

Discover a deeper insight into your dreams in this answer from Sri Harold Klemp.

Dreaming about Medieval Times

Q: I haven’t been having any dreams that I can remember for the past month. This is unusual for me; I usually have dreams all the time. Is it karma? I would like to know, if possible, because I learn from my dreams.

Another thing I would like to know is, are there knights on the higher planes? I am attracted to medieval wars and battles.

A: In answer to your first question: By the time you read this, you will have started to dream again. There are times when Soul shifts gears; this is when we don’t always remember our dreams. But it is a passing thing.

About your attraction to knights and medieval wars and battles: Your interest in that period of history is due to your many past lives there.

It was a time of great adventure, chivalry, and heroics. The forces of darkness and light were in a hotly contested battle for centuries, and you played a part in those unsettled, but interesting, times.

History can teach us much about how mankind’s unlearned lessons repeat themselves. This allows us to use our knowledge to avoid unnecessary problems, because we can sidestep a lot of them.

People make history. You might enjoy the historical novels by Mary Stewart that bring to life the times of King Arthur at the beginning of the Middle Ages: The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, The Last Enchantment, and The Wicked Day.

You’ll find many spiritual insights in these books, for the author is adept at looking at past-life records on the Causal Plane.

Why Do We Have Bad Dreams?

If you’ve been experiencing bad dreams, it’s not just by coincidence. Dreams often reveal traumas from past lives.

By understanding these lingering past-life memories, we can start to address our phobias, aversions, and unexplained fears. We can begin to acknowledge their origins and ultimately move ahead with confidence.

Gain further insights from Sri Harold Klemp about bad dreams:

“A good dream is one that helps you grow stronger, wiser, and more full of love.

So what are bad dreams for?

Children often have nightmares until the age of six or eight, and sometimes longer. Grown-ups do too, though not so often as a rule. But why scary dreams for good people?

A negative dream is generally a memory of a past life.

It may include experiences of mistreatment, suffering, and even death. Some of us even have dreams of being born, which can give a feeling of suffocation.

These experiences are part of everyone. Children still remember bits and pieces of past lives, and these bad dreams are a part of them.

Bad dreams are old fears.

Having a disturbing dream is like airing out a musty room in spring. You need to face that old fear until it loses its grip, for only then can you be free to live this life to its fullest.

So good and bad dreams both hold spiritual lessons.”

The Law of Karma

Past & Present Lives

By Harold Klemp

We are each the sum of all our thoughts, feelings, and actions from this life and every lifetime in the past.

The past is a fascinating study. Even more so is learning of a present condition that saw birth in a past life.

To celebrate their wedding anniversary, a couple took a cruise. A port of call was Mexico. The couple went to see the Mayan ruins at Tulum, took many pictures, and also bathed in the turquoise waters nearby. The cruise was a happy, memorable event.

But it proved to be more than a physical journey.

Just Coincidence?

Soon after their return home, both the woman’s husband and her father became ill with the same problem, congestive heart failure. They were taken to the same hospital, the same floor, and shared the same doctor. An interesting quirk of timing and location.

On top of that, the wife, four months before the cruise, had been brought to that very hospital and saw the same doctor, because she too had a heart problem.

A small world indeed.

The woman who wrote this account to me is a student of Eᴄᴋᴀɴᴋᴀʀ. She reports that it was an obvious spiritual lesson of sorts. But what?

The Past-Life Dream

She asked the Mᴀʜᴀɴᴛᴀ, the Inner Master, for an insight.

Then came a dream. It showed her a past life when she, her husband, even her father, and the doctor were Mayans. On the day of a great festival, crowds of people in bright colors and feathers filled the streets around the temples. The doctor was a high priest. He was at the top of the temple stairs performing human sacrifices. The Mᴀʜᴀɴᴛᴀ spared her the experience of reliving her family’s and her own death.

The dream was clear. The priest who did human sacrifices in those ancient days was now their doctor. His field of service today was to heal hearts, not rip them out.

That’s how the Law of Karma deals with misdeeds.

A bright sidelight to the dream is that she had a healing. She no longer needs to take any heart medication.

The Past-Life Lesson

Many of our dreams relate to past lives. Once we come to that realization, we can begin to access the experiences that lie hidden within our memory banks.

And, yes, it is possible to bring hard-won lessons from past lives into the present for a better understanding of our situation in life today. The spiritual exercise of the HU song can pull aside the veils that shade your inner vision.

For the spiritual student, it’s all about liberation. It’s about experiencing the freedom, joy, and wisdom of Soul.

How to Resolve Karma

Wondering how to resolve karma from past lives and this one? Check out this answer from Sri Harold Klemp to just such a question….

Q: People reincarnate to resolve karma created in past lifetimes. But, observing world events, it seems people are creating more karma for themselves. Will people learn to work together while resolving their karma? If we take responsibility for our actions, then when will our karma be finished so reincarnation is no longer necessary?

A: The whole process of refining Souls through resolving karma made in past lives is a slow, careful one. The mills of karma grind slowly, but exceedingly fine.

Yes, people are very busy every day creating new karma for themselves. The reason is they overreact to every slight. They show a lack of respect first for themselves, then for others. They need still to develop the quality of grace. Grace and respect are two signs of a mature spiritual individual, whatever his religion or beliefs.

Karma works itself off by levels through the hard experiences of life, the university of hard knocks. A Soul that completes a certain level of purification then graduates to a higher level of choice, experience, and service.

You’ll find that many leaders in politics belong to the school of adolescent Souls. It explains their shortsighted and irresponsible behavior as the supposed representatives of their electorate. But they too will someday move above their own limitations.

For a better understanding about the workings of karma, read Dr. Michael Newton’s book Journey of Souls (Llewellyn Worldwide, Woodbury, Minnesota). The knowledge in it should give you a greater degree of contentment.
